What do these photos have to do w/ 30 minutes of beachtime??...Well, when we were in Maui for our wedding/honeymoon 2&1/2 years ago, due to a wildfire that shut down the only road circling the island & other circumstances, we ended up only getting to the beach once during our time there. SO, we thought "ah, this Christmas holiday, we can make up for our lost honeymoon & lounge on the beach more." As an anniversary present, we were even given 2 nights in a condo by the beach (The first few nights we stayed w/my bro, sis-inlaw & CUTE nephew. My parents were also there). Well, upon arrival at our condo the first night, we found it a mess. The trash was overflowing, the bed was unmade, the bathtub was filled w/towels. We had to call maintenance (the office was closed) & they said they could get someone to clean it the next morning, but we could stay that night for free. "No , thank you! It's too messy & spooky cuz it feels like someone's still living there!" So, I called my bro & he kindly welcomed us back to stay with him for one more night. The next morning we went back to the condo, which was now clean, put down our stuff & headed to a beach that a guidebook recommended for its many turtles. It was an adventure in itself finding the place, but alas we found it, put down our stuff on the sand, slathered on some sunscreen & headed for the water. AHH...finally...time to enjoy the beautiful waters of Maui! We swam out a little bit...no turtles...no fish..."guess we have to swim out further..." So we swim on. Taka's goggles are constantly filling up with water, which is not good b/c he wears contacts. He's constantly having to empty them. The tide (and maybe the way I turn into a fish in the water:) separates us. We're out pretty deep & Taka's now having to tread water while emptying out his goggles every minute. (I didn't realize this at the time since we were apart.) Still no fish or turtles, by the way. I see Taka stop at a rock I swam by a bit ago. Not too long after, he's swimming quickly towards me, stops and is saying something to me in rapid-fire Japanese. The only part I caught was "I almost died!!.kanikakerukokikakeko" (that's what it sounded like to me). I asked if he could say it again in English, but he just kept swimming to the shore. Not even getting all the way on land, he sat & started looking at his toes. I thought he just had sand in his toenails, but once I get to him, I see that he has 3 black marks in his big toe. (Meanwhile, waves are coming in and knocking him over.) Apparently, while he was resting on the rock out in the water after almost drowning from the exhaustion of treading, some sea creature attacked his toe! We had no idea what creature it was (poisonous or not?), so--having been at the beach just 30 mins.-- we packed up our stuff , left the beach & went to the drug store & got some rubbing alcohol. We went back to the condo & Taka spent the next two hours doing "surgery" on his toe, trying to pick out the needles in his toe (not successfully). Meanwhile, I decided to take a shower & long story short, the showerhead fell off the wall and hit me in the chin (it was heavy!)...What an adventurous and memorable "honeymoon". We think if there's a next time, we'll try somewhere other than Maui....I'll attach some photos of Taka doing "surgery" on his feet (his other foot got a gash from coral). OH, & thankfully his toe didn't swell, and we are still alive to tell these stories:) PHOTOS: Taka collapsing on the bed when we got back to the condo...Taka beginning his surgery....Taka after 2 hours of "surgery" (notice the sun is setting)
